I would like to go skiing in Aspen or Vail, but I can't because I cannot afford it, but I can drive 1/2 hr from my house and sit on a nice clean white sandy beach with temps right around 80 and it doesn't cost me a cent except for the gas to get there. Michelle Obama does a winter sport a month after visiting her in-laws for Christmas (a holiday which also in occurs in winter). Conservatives outraged that the first lady didn't wait until summer to go skiing.

Does anyone really think security cost go on vacation when the Obamas are home in DC? Leaders of Nations have security forces protecting them wherever they are, even when shopping for socks and a tie or visiting a doctors office. The price of the aviation fuel goes up when he flies for vacation to a rental home in Hawaii. It's 5 hrs. to cross the Pacific to Hawaii. His security in the island is an extra cost in the State.

Sammy, the Huffington Post was repeating an 'estimate' by the Hawaii Reporter newspaper. Almost 3.3 million of the estimate was based on the supposed cost of $181,757.00 per flight hour to run Air Force One. That includes dividing up the money spent on supporting AF1 while it's sitting on the ground so a good portion of the $3.3 million would be spent no matter what.

That same estimate includes $100K for Mrs. Obama and the children leaving early which gives you an idea of just how much of the AF1 costs are around security, communication, et al for the president. And the four million includes the monies the president spent of his own on accomodations, etc.

The simple fact is, costs around keeping the president and first family safe are very high whether they are in DC, Aspen or Hawaii and that isn't going to change. Costs around keeping the president in touch with the rest of the world are high no matter where he may be. Putting together estimates like this one just gives 'wingers' something to bitch about.

First the Huffington Post dated 02/20 has nothing about Michelle Obama and comparing costs from the Hawaii vacation and this "SKI WEEKEND" that she is taking with her daughters. One more thing the ASE certifications every one thinks is so important that a technician needs to have to do the work correctly on your car can be received if he misses 54% of the questions. My brother has found that going through college has been the same way one of his roommates got a c (64%) and that was fine he got a 3.87 and averages in his classes 87%. Both have the same degree and both have jobs now teaching.

Clearly I disagree. But we are indulging a hypothetical so neither of us can be 'right'. I just think with all the things causing Republicans to get whipped up into a fury, I don't see how they wouldn't have tried that, if it was possible.

Another thing to consider is, maybe Democrats are not @!$%#ing up as badly as Republicans in regards to their promises. Maybe the Democrats that did manage to get elected in 2010, are actually doing what they said they'd do rather then pulling a new agenda out once they are elected.

The commotion in and around the hotel made it almost impossible to get in and out of. Plus, when I finally left to go the airport, the Secret Service had roads closed to and from the airport, and I almost missed my flight.
