We Want A Dead Simple Web Tablet For $200. Help Us Build It.

advertisement

I'm tired of waiting - I want a dead simple and dirt cheap touch screen web tablet to surf the web. Nothing fancy like the Dell latitude XT, which costs $2,500. Just a Macbook Air-thin touch screen machine that runs Firefox and possibly Skype on top of a Linux kernel. It doesn't exist today, and as far as we can tell no one is creating one. So let's design it, build a few and then open source the specs so anyone can create them.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

just FYI, you linked to the comment section.

pretty cool but there are peopel workign on this but I agree no fast enough. there is some rumours of a mac tablet comign out in a couple months. still this open source movement could be cool.

The idea is to turn it on, bypass any desktop interface, and go directly to Firefox running in a modified Kiosk mode that effectively turns the browser into the operating system for the device.

there is a lot of work on this.. there are opensource bioses being developed that do exactly this... mainly for laptops and such,t hat will have a smalls screen on the outside of the case that will let you check email and surf the web without booting to an os or opening the laptop. SOme gets hampered by he commercial industry, licencing and such and the open source community doesn't quit have the same resources as the closed commerical industry.

SOme times these things have a way of kciking the commercial industry in the behind and get them movign, as the last thign they would want would be for something like this to becoem the household name for tablet pc's
