Abbeynet Labs released today the first version of a Firefox VoIP extension, that means that you can now have a full featured SIP user agent directly into Firefox. This is a very useful tool to enhance the VOW experience.

Interesting Indeed. Now all they need is a marketing campaign to make more of the populace aware of it.

IE sucks, but their marketing is brilliant.

But, uh, why? Can I not run my voip program and firefox at the same time? Why do these things need to be together? It's like, if someone announced an all new model stove, now with optional skate sharpener attachment!

Cars with built in phones are fancy ay? But you can use your cellphone...

Exactly. That's another thing I've never understood; why not just have a plug for your cell phone to plug into an antenna on the roof of the car? I've already got a phone; why build in another one? Oh, and chances are that I'm going to have to have two cell plans, one for my real cell phone, and one for my carphone. I feel the same way about cell phones with radio built in: why? If I wanted radio, I'd bring a high quality portable radio, not the crappy thing built into the cell. The only combos I can remotely understand are things like radio/cd/tape machines; I can clearly see how these functions are related, so it's okay. But otherwise...no.

alkey

The "plug for your cell phone to plug into an antenna on the roof of the car" is already out. Bluetooth handles this function (wireless phone to radio connection). You just need to ensure your radio and phone are both bluetooth-capable.

I don't like to use a cell phone or a car phone. Talking into the mic above the steering wheel, and having the voice of the person I'm calling come through the car's built-in quality audio system is an experience I hope I never have to give up. And it's more hands-free than hands-free phones: no headset require occasional adjustment by hand. ^^

I think that it's more of a proof of concept then actually trying to build firefox into a one stop shop application.

I agree. I see no point in adding this functionality. Firefox already has enough memory management problems and adding this will only continue to bloat the application. I remember when Firefox was a fast, responsive app. Since then, I've switched back to using Safari.

Some of you seem to be missing the fact that this is a Firefox extension developed by a third party. The functionality is only there if you *want* it to be. So unless installed, it will not add, in any way, to the browser's overhead or "bloat."

This has been around for a while.
It was mentioned in MacAddict or MacWorld, and they prepare their stories a few weeks, if not months early.

I remember reading about this in a recent MacWorld article comparing all the VoIP services.

Sadly, I have enough things going on that make me a slave to my PC... I don't need phone calls to be added to that list! Sure, I can fully understand the attraction of free Internet calls, not to mention the crazy-low rates for PC-to-Station calls, so that's why I'm looking into things like this:

Besides, for some reason, I've never been able to get used to Firefox. I must have installed it and uninstalled it 3 times trying to be open-minded. I think there's a saying about old dogs and new tricks...

Well that is why they are extensions - you don't install things you don't want or need.

That is appeal of FF for me ever since launch. While the VOIP is cool - I don't reckon that I want to be talking to people that much anyway.

I do see this as pointless. Skype does a beautiful job of this already as do some other programs. I see no point in this.
